Volunteer Spotlight: 95-Year-Old Still Enjoys Delivering Meals to “Seniors”

George Hamilton is living proof that age is only a number. Mr. Hamilton, who is a very dedicated volunteer of the United Way Area Agency on Aging’s Meals on Wheels program, just celebrated his 95th birthday. With a long history of public service, including 10 mission trips to Nicaragua, he began delivering meals to homebound seniors in Jefferson County about 20 years ago. He took a break for a while after his wife passed away, but it wasn’t long before he experienced the call to service once again and he’s still at it.

In addition to his Meals on Wheels “career,” Mr. Hamilton has led a full life. He worked in the trucking industry for 20 years, worked at Vulcan Materials for 20 years and spent 15 years in steel fabrication. He also lettered in college baseball, played briefly for the Boston Red Sox, still coaches church league softball…and bats once a year. He has three children, four grandchildren and four great-grands!
